Pure Food and Wine was created back in 2004 as New York City’s first upscale raw vegan restaurant. It is based on the East Side of Manhattan in Gramercy. I have wanted to visit for a while now and luckily for me I was in New York for a few days to check it out!
The restaurant was co-founded by Sarma Melngailis. Who is also the founder/owner of One Lucky Duck, One Lucky Duck Juice and Takeaway (one of these is located just around the corner from Pure Food & Wine) and co-author of Raw Food Real World and author of Living Raw Food.
During the winter months, the restaurant seats 64 indoors and 16 in their back dining room, which can also be booked for private dinners. In the spring and summer, the beautiful outside terrace is open. There is also a bar situated both indoors and outside, where they serve a selection of wines that are either biodynamic, organic, or sustainable. I was impressed to see a selection from my home country of New Zealand! Their cocktails are made by using organic sake, mixed with organic fresh pressed juices, fresh herbs, and exotic flavours. There is also a selection of organic beer, with a gluten-free option as well. Which I was told by my waiter, one of the best gluten-free beers he has tasted.
The restaurant serves its dinner menu nightly from 5:30pm to 11:00pm. Lunch is open daily from 12:00pm to 4:00pm.
I visited during lunch time and really wanted to sit in their beautiful outside terrace but unfortunately for me that day was way too cold and windy. So I sat inside near the front looking out to the street.
The staff are very friendly and gave great recommendations. I started with the Swan Greens cold pressed juice, a refreshing mix of cucumber, spinach, dandelion, pear, grapefruit, tarragon, spearmint and yuzu. And for lunch I ended up selecting from the 3 course lunch menu and chose the Tuscan Kale & Radicchio Salad, Tortilla Wrap and Lemon Bar for dessert.
The Tuscan Kale & Radicchio Salad is a delicate finely chopped salad, consisting of red grapes, golden raisins, pine nuts, pumpkin seeds, lemon caper vinaigrette, topped with raw parmesan made from macadamia. It was very light and made for a great starter!
The Tortilla Wrap consisted of three wraps made with a light spicy sun-dried tomato filling, corn cilantro guacamole, tomato lime salsa and sour cream made from cashew. They had loads of flavor and lots of avocado in the guacamole. And for something so small, they were very filling!
I love anything lemon, so I was excited to try the Lemon Bar. And I found it had the perfect balance of tart lemon and sweetness! The tart lemon custard, as described in the menu is a little on the firm side, however it was the perfect amount to match the almond and coconut base. I also enjoyed this with a Chamomile Lavender tea (Brew Lab Tea) . It had the most beautiful lavender scent and was the perfect ending to my healthy and nutritious lunch.
Next time I go to New York City I will make sure to visit Pure Food & Wine on a warmer day so I can enjoy the outside terrace. It’s a lovely place for lunch or for an intimate dinner with friends or your significant other to enjoy a delicious healthy raw meal, with a glass of beautiful organic wine. I look forward to visiting again soon!
